Long live the "King"...
When I heard that Raja Petra was recently arrested, I can honestly say I'm not shocked.
In fact, the shock came when I read that a number of MPs, bloggers and well wishers came to support him for his stance on the "freedom of the press".
Really?
Permit me to ask, how many of these well wishing individuals actually read the article entitled so "admiringly" as "Let's send Altantuya's murderers to hell".
On a side note, who is Raja to judge who goes to heaven or hell? I thought that was His job, not ours.
Does he actually know how to send people to hell? Because Muhammad Muhammad Taib also received such a statement before.
I'm rambling.
I think we should ask the opinions of those who have read the article. One person who seems to have somehow remained in the right state of mind is "Rocketman" Jeff Ooi, and yes, I am choking a bit on my words at the very mention of the name.
However, as being perhaps the only person who is still reading the article in question, I will simply note this.
The article in itself is not seditious, because the seditious comments put into the article was written by Petra as 'a rumor', or 'something whispered in corridors'. That puts the interpretation of said paragraphs totally into the hands of the readers and how they portray it, either as true or false.
Honestly if this was to be allowed under the Sedition Act, then may I ask that the police re-open the investigation of the Mufti of Perak and the case of the "SMS of Azhar Mansor's baptism" and "Lina Joy's win" under the same act?
Seeing as how according to this act, Section 3 (1) (e) defines seditions as "to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Malaysia"?
Or are you going to sweep this one under the rug because it does not mention "religion"?
If anything, Raja Petra is simply guilty in pointing out the fallacies of what a free press can do in terms of causing chaos. Malaysiakini is definitely now a valid source of left wing news, but at the same time, opinion pieces which spark fiery hatred towards individuals to the point of condemning them to hell....
Is this truly what we want to see in the mainstream media?
Comments
I respect RPK as a person, but as a writer of an opinion piece, I consider his controversial role rivaling that of Ann Coulter.
Only that Ann Coulter appears subtler, and I admit that while actually shivering in disgust....
to be direct would simply have him actually charged under the Sedition Act for real.
