Oh i dont know, considering the history of the song it makes sense.

According to legend it was believed it was inspired by a feud between Arthur Smith's (the original musician) friend who was at the time fighting Washington to be able to keep his property called grandfather mountain. The government was trying to take the land so they could build a road threw it.

The differing instruments (originally it was a duel between a banjo and a mandolin) are said to represent the conflicting sides of the debate over grandfather mountain.

Thats one of the great things about bluegrass music, usually there is a real story behind nearly every song or tune.

oh, i forgot to mention the friend won his case against the government. I love happy endings.
